A CONGRATULATORY, ADVISORY SPEECH TO ALL ADMITTED STUDENTS (FRESHERS). With much alacrity, dear bona fide freshers, I bring you greetings, good wishes and felicitation from Imo state. Your bravoic, wowish admission bouncebackability is the most remarkable success for which I, OKOROMA CHIDERA DONATUS, have long wished and prayed. Your name figuring in the list of candidates admitted with merit goes to add to the appreciation of God for His mercy and grace upon your lives. The road was initially narrow; but now, by the stupendous grace of the Almighty God, it is now clear for you to join the conglomeration of intellectuals in the den: the best varsity in the South-East, Nigeria; in extension, one of the best varsities in West-Africa. Indeed, it is a citadel of intellectuity. Make merry, therefore, dear FRESHERS! Truly, you all have proven to your friends and relatives how hardworking and dedicated you are in achieving such an enviable success in life. It was never easy to pass through the severity of the UNN king-kong admission; but to the utmost amazement of observers, God has done it in the end, by gracing your hardwork-cum-perseverance, by debunking all false impressions credited to your pursuit of admission. May His name be highly exalted! Sentimentally, I humbly hold to high esteem my fellow LEGAL lions and lionesses, and the would-be Doctors in the department of Medicine and Surgery. Indeed, you all are exclusively wonderful. You were never deterred by the rather-too-high population of the candidates that applied for the respective departments with you. By successfully making it by merit, you have proven to all and sundry that, beyond reasonable doubt, you will definitely become outstanding professionals in a few years to come. I therefore heartily thank God on your behalf, who has as-expectedly graced your relentless hardwork. Nevertheless, my distinguished fellow-FRESHERS, I wish to crave your indulgence to promptly let you know that your attained success is never your making -- not by your strength and knowledge. Certainly, you are not better than many of those who are not fortunate enough to have their names figured in the merit admission list. Yes, you worked very hard; but many of them also worked hard. The same grace, mercy, favour, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, retentive memory, sound and vigorous health, and courage for which you asked God was also asked for by them. Having participated in the examinations with you, I have come to realize that emerging triumphal was not basically via ones knowledge; what many of us call God-factor served as the palladium that determined our success. Let us, therefore, not look down on them, whereby regarding them as failures. Rather, let us embrace them more than before, no longer as our competitors in the admission race, but as our dear brothers and sisters. Let us encourage them to hurriedly meet us at the top. You really have to bear in mind that reaching the very top before them was neither by your willpower nor intellectual prowess; it was basically by the grace and prevailing will of God -- He has a purpose for allowing it so: He has put you there before them so as to help make the road less narrow for their majestic arrival. The unfortunate situation in which they are, truly, is a test of time: it is in this test of time that they will know their friends in need. Would you, then, be their friends in need? Also, I want you all to know that it is not yet over until it is over: How do I means? Yes, it is true that you have been admitted in the prestigious UNN; but truly, the struggle has just begun; because to whom much is given, much is expected. This is the right time to plan your to-be-adopted campus lifestyles. It is also the fortuitous opportunity to plan your future and please, do not waste it. Let your aspiration undergo a paradigm shift from being a student to becoming the best turn-out of our set. The time is now! The University of Nigeria is a place where the morality of meritocracy is always upheld in its extremity. It is a varsity where there are rigorous competitions, as a result of the varsitys implicit compliance to the ethics of meritocracy. It is a varsity in which you are to offer the very best of yourself, your knowledge, and your unmitigated technicality. The only way you can achieve these noble objectives is by engaging yourself -- starting from now -- in the various activities that help in developing your intellectual vivacity, sagacity and ubiquity. Thank you and God Bless. Comrade-in-law Honour McDon, Fresher.
