A CTV News article today released a study by the University of British Columbia that takes a look at the issues surrounding Facebook “likes” versus actual donations to charities produced from social media exposure. (read the original article for more info, linked in the blog post below. The article deals primarily with money, but there is more than one way to support a cause in a positive, active way) While charities may not always ask for donations from the public, they are always in need on an ongoing basis. The connections made via social media are always hoped to bring a broader exposure to a charity’s needs and cause, but modern studies have been uncovering the effective reality may fall short of the intended goals, in that social media exposure and charity needs do not necessarily correlate into one unified force of action. And while charities have thousands of people who like Twitter or Facebook pages, the bills are still typically a challenge that is faced on a month to month basis, with a charity’s reach limited by the finances. This is true for all animal rescues, and for all charities in general as well. The hard truth to swallow (to spin off the original CTV article position): If everyone who “liked” a charity Facebook page donated a mere $1 a month, they would generate thousands of dollars collectively for their cause, making a huge tangible difference in the causes they support. It’s becoming a part of our technological culture, to hit that button and never look back… but what if each person who clicked that button also followed it up with positive action? For animal rescues, the things you can do to make a difference are fostering, adopting, educating and donating. Please remember: without the general public’s ongoing support, charities are nothing at the end of the day, and in the age of digital media it is extremely easy to click a button in support of your cause without actually following up with actions that can make a difference.
