A College Paper by Lucian Wilde called Finding the Ghost of the Mind Hypnosis is a much debated issue among psychologist and believers/unbelievers, trying to understand the ghost of the mind, the thoughts in-between an altered consciousness and unconsciousness. What is hypnosis? The Bing dictionary defines it as an artificially induced condition: a condition that can be artificially induced in people, in which they can respond to questions and are very susceptible to suggestions from the hypnotist. Dr. Timothy R. Jennings says it deals with a third party that suspends one’s reasoning and allows a third party to give suggestion, direction and implant beliefs. Hypnosis can be used for several things; to help with hay fever, weightless, IBS, skin disorder, warts, healing wounds, pain control and fertility. MRI brain scans show that hypnosis has less activity in two areas of the hypnotized brain. The altered consciousness shows a person’s visual to be effected and perhaps the part of the brain that deals with difficulty. Hypnosis being used for pain has been effective according to Researchers at the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. “Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to find out if hypnosis alters brain activity in a way that might explain pain reduction. The researchers found that volunteers under hypnosis experienced significant pain reduction in response to painful heat. They also had a distinctly different pattern of brain activity compared to when they were not hypnotized and experienced the painful heat. The changes in the brain activity suggest that hypnosis somehow blocks the pain signal from getting to the parts of the brain that perceive pain. These results were reported in the November 2004 issue of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.” Finding the ghost of the mind remains an ongoing mystery. In what way is hypnosis real? “One suggestion is that hypnosis is a mental state, while another links it to imaginative role-enactment.” More research is needed as scientist and psychologist work hard to help heal the minds of patience that suffer from different elements.
