A Facebook page protesting against approval for a mosque in - TopicsExpress

A Facebook page protesting against approval for a mosque in Currumbin (Gold Coast, Queensland) was finally closed by Facebook over the weekend. The page not only incited hatred against Muslims, it was also seeking to intimidate the local council. Both the page itself and users commenting on the page made threats of violence against one Councillor, the comments included a threat of gang rape against the woman Councillor. Other members of the council were called traitors and accused of corruption by the anti-Mosque page. Both Facebook and Government need to do more to stop this vilification of minorities and the intimidation of elected representatives. Use of social media in this way directly undermines not only Australias multiculturalism, but our democracy as well. Further details: ohpi.org.au/the-mosque-at-currumbin/
