A Gemini Full Moon on St. Nicholas Eve By Dikki-Jo Mullen, Astrologer The final Full Moon of 2014 coincides with the busiest part of the holiday season. It accents revelry of all kinds. Luna will be Full on St. Nicholas Eve at 14 degrees of Gemini, December 6, 2014 at 7:27 am EST. The Gemini lunation hints at curiosity, a great deal of mail, travel and multi tasking. Many will want to get out and about. Gemini is the sign of the storyteller. It is likely that the sharing of holiday stories of all kinds will delight children of all ages this year. The Sabian Symbol for this Full Moon is intriguing, it is “Two Dutch children talking.” This implies an affinity for communicating with like minded souls in an open and innocent way. However, the childhood analogy with Holland also brings the Eve of St. Nicholas to mind. In Holland St, Nicholas was Sinti Klass, who eventually became Santa, hinting at some kind of relationship between the beloved Christmas figures. To begin the Christmas holiday season, St. Nick would often visit on December 5 or 6, bringing oranges, apples and nuts to those who had been good. This was a hint that expectations would be high on December 25, Christmas morning, for larger gifts left by Santa Claus. St. NickÂ’s visit in early December originated in Western Europe, especially Holland, and in Russia. The real life story of St. Nicholas is preserved in oral traditions. Known for his kindness and generosity , Nicholas was an only child born in Lycia in Asia Minor early in the 4th Century CE. He first learned to give to those less fortunate from his charitable and wealthy parents. Once he purchased grain to feed his entire homeland from ships bound for Alexandria, Egypt. Good Nicholas also threw gold coins into a home to provide dowries for three poor but good sisters, among his many other good deeds. This story might be the origin of one of his symbols; three bags, rumored to be filled with gold. Eventually Nicholas became a Bishop. There is a record that he sat at The Council of Nicea in 325 CE. His death is recorded as December 6, 342 CE, which is why that day is his Saint‘s Day. When Nicholas died it was said that a miraculous healing oil flowed from his tomb. Since the early Middle Ages many miracles have been attributed to Good St. Nick. He has been the Patron Saint of Russia, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and recently the USA. An old custom is to serve delicious cakes of fruits and nuts along with a warm drink on his Holiday. This is where holiday fruit cake probably originated. (I love fruit cake) Connect with the spirit of Good Saint Nick at the Full Moon this December 6. Perhaps his spirit of good will and charity will manifest a blessing for you during these turbulent times of planetary change. The Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn square is exact at 12 degrees on the Full Moon. This long term transit has been responsible for much of the unrest in the world. However this Christmas holiday season also brings a grand trine in fire signs with Uranus in Aries, Jupiter in Leo and several Sagittarius transits, including the Sun, Mercury and Venus. That pattern promises a hopeful balance to the difficult cardinal sign square. The Grand Fire Trine may show enthusiasm for sports, progress, technology and moving toward future productivity. Candlelight, colorful holiday art and music will also be appreciated by many. The Celtic Zodiac This is the time of Ruis The Elder Tree November 25 - December 22 The Elder Tree and Raven The Celtic Zodiac is often linked to Stonehenge, in England which is perhaps the world’s largest and oldest astrology calculator. The Celtic Zodiac is an astrology calendar based on a cycle of Tree and Plant emblems. The Elder Tree is linked to healing, study and teaching. The Elderberry is used to make wine and jelly, its fruit is thought to be most nourishing. Those living in the South who are drawn to foraging can find elder berries growing wild now, to harvest. The animal guide of Ruis is the Blackbird or Raven. This noble bird is clever and can often speak, much like a parrot. It is a keeper of mysteries and guardian of valuable information. Yuletide The various winter holiday celebrations all revolve around the mystique of the Winter Solstice or Yuletide. This year The Winter Solstice is on December 21, 2014 Â…At 6:03 pm EST. This is the longest night and shortest day of the entire year and marks the beginning of winter. The Sun enters Capricorn on the winter solstice. Since earliest times this has been a deeply spiritual time, marking the return of the light from the point of greatest darkness. Sacred fires and candles are especially cherished during Yuletide celebrations. There is a belief that bayberry candles burned to the end between Yuletide and Epiphany on January 6 will assure luck and protection during the year ahead. Bayberry Candles Burned to the Socket bring love, good health and gold in the pocket”, the legend goes…. Light a bayberry candle or other favorite candle or a fire to invoke the angels and spirits of deep winter to bless and brighten your path!
