A Greens Candidate that actually Backs Rec Fishing - WHAT THE?! The Greens candidate for Dawson Jonathon Dykyj has thrown his support behind a proposal by fishing and tourism groups to create a net free zone between Cape Conway and Cape Hillsborough. "This makes sense on so many levels. It has worked in the Northern Territory to create a magnet for sustainable tourism, and also from an environmental point of view it will eliminate the unnecessary deaths of a large number of turtles, dugongs and dolphins which tourists also come to see. "Locals in these areas report a significant decline in fish, turtle, dugong and dolphins whenever the commercial netters have been working the area. This is not sustainable at all," Mr Dykyj said. "People come to our region to enjoy our natural assets and therefore they must be appropriately protected. "This proposal will see commercial netting licences bought out and must be done in consultation with the commercial licence holders. "By doing this we can ensure plenty of fishing into the future; a strong, diverse economy and a healthy, functioning environment which underpins it all.
