A LESSON LEARNT..... I know this post will revive the doubts and suspicion in some people, I just pray the essence of this post is not lost on all. On my way home yesterday, I had an encounter which got me thinking and left me convinced that all we need is courage. I was on a bus, a commercial bus. The bus driver did overtake a bus, and while at it, the guy behind him felt slighted..felt that was dangerous driving. Im not making case for the driver of the bus I was on, but he had the right of way, and did nothing wrong if only the guy behind us had given him the mandated distance but we all know how people drive bumper to bumper in Nigeria as if we are on a Formula 1 track. The bus driver later gave way for the guy behind us. It was a Toyota Pick-up truck. What I saw next was stunning...and obviously got me so miffed!! The driver on the orders of his companion slammed on the brakes, our driver did the same as the truck was carrying objects, metal/iron rods obviously for a building project and it was protruding from the haul of the truck. It could have ripped through the windshield if there was a collusion and the resulted into multiple accidents. On seeing the damage of their actions, he sped off and I told the bus driver to chase him down. It seemed a lost cause until he ran into traffic. Trust me... I jumped off the bus, and the passenger to did... Then it dawned on me why they did it... The passenger was a Naval rating...more like an escort. Then it started... Hot exchange of words... He swore at me and I gave him waka. While we were at it...I stood my ground and stood up to him eyeball to eyeball.. He tried shoving me aside, and I brushed off his hand.. I kept addressing him with his rank, I told him because he was on the truck didnt give the driver right to flout the law, and all he will achieve is buy job for the driver and I will clear his (drivers) doubts. Never knew people had gathered.. He next questioned jolted me.. The rating asked; Oga, are you a personnel? My response was what has that got to do with the issue here? Only then did it dawn on me that I have a clean shave, my choice of words, and courage to confront a personnel in uniform, which to the Naval ranting is unusual of a bloody baggar unless his father is an officer. Moreover, I didnt look that young or timid...so I guess he (Naval rating) did a mental calculation as felt this was just an officer trying to rope him in.. His tone and stance softened down, and he withdraw from the encounter and that was it.. They sped off.. The passengers with me on the bus didnt help the situation, the moment I got in, they gave me the suspicious look... What is the essence of this post... Its not for self adulation or self praise singing.. The essence...the lesson is as long as we are never intimidated by the size, status, reputation and history of what/who is confronting us, once we stand firm on our resolve, once we are bold enough to take it on...Trust me, its game on... The essence here is courage...it will inspire strong will, gut, and determination in you..in us..
