A Love for the Word Believers a vital component of a growing relationship with the Lord is time spent in Bible study, both corporately and individually. Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples” (John 8:31). The Bible study time ought to provide opportunities for the disciple to hear God speak from His Word. In our churches today sometimes the tendency is to leave the “study” part to the expert, the pastor, and allow him to tell listeners what it says. Listening actively and learning from appropriate preaching and teaching are important, but so is our personal study. Developing an intimate relationship with others involves spending time with them and learning how they think, feel, and act. A love for Christ is indicated by a love for His Word and by developing habits of reading, studying, meditating on it, and committing it to memory. Most of all it involves living it out and acting according to the principles learned and internalized. Just as Jesus applied the Word in His daily living, as when He responded to Satan in the desert, so we ought to follow His example. We are not to be a forgetful hearer but a doer who acts—this person will be blessed in what he does (Jas 1:25). We must hunger for His Word!!
