A MOMENT IN HISTORY November 8, 1979 - James Hallisey was appointed the Chief of Department on November 8, 1979 by Mayor David E. Crosby. The son of a firefighter William Hallisey, he was a 1948 Brockton High School graduate and previously attended Saint Patricks School, He joined the Fire Department on January 28, 1957. After his high school graduation he served four years in the United States Navy. After his USN enlistment he worked at the Raytheon Microwave Development group. As a firefighter he was assigned to Squad A and Engine 5. When he was promoted to Lieutenant he was transferred to Station 4. On February 4, 1970 Hallisey was badly hurt when he fell fifty feet off an icy roof at a two alarm fire on Tremont Street. On May 14, 1971 he was promoted to Captain and assigned to Station 2. Hallisey served four years as President of Brockton Firefighters Local 144 IAFF and six years as a trustee Massachusetts Association of Firefighters. He received an associates degree in Fire Science from Massasoit Community College where he later taught. He retired as the seventh permanent Chief of the Department on January 2, 1993. Two of Halliseys sons continued with the families history of Public Service. Both are Brockton Police Officers. Please share with your friends and ask them to LIKE the Brockton Fire Museum!
