A MUST READ FOR OVER ZEALOUS YOUTH WHO LOVES TO ARGUE A dialogue between two great men. The best dialogue on tolerance. Hazrat Umar complained to Abu Bakr (r) that he was linient on Khalid bin Walid (r) and should punish him (for killing Malik Bin Nuwayrah and marrying his widow). Hazrat Abu Bakr (r) pointed out that Malik had apostated and fought against Muslims, so he was killed. But Hazrat Umar (r) believed that Khalid (r) did haste in killing him and should have consulted him (Abu Bakr). Anyhow, the argument was going on and here is the best speech on how to have tolerance in disagreement, which Abu Bakr (r) made: O Umar, infallible revelations have ceased. (after death of Rasul Allah s.a.w). God has outlined the details of what is permissible and what is forbidden. The Prophet made sure that we have all this in full clarity. As for worldly matters, including Governments affairs and management of peoples interests, we must remain God-fearing, think hard, consult with one another and pray to God to help us make the right decisions. I dearly wish that what we face is either as clearly right as daylight or clearly wrong as the dark night. We would never disagree in that case. But the world is not like that. Why has God ordered us to resort to consultation, if the right course was very clear in every matter? Since this is the nature of life, people will have divergent views. This is how God has ordained human life. The main condition is that it (disagreement) should be controlled through consultation and God-fearing. This ensures that disagreement and having different views do not develop into conflict. I have explained my policy. You have a different policy. Each has its validity, strength and weakness. I praise God who has given me Umar to help me so that the two policies will moderate each other. Look at the character of Umar (r). He listened attentively to this speech and kept silence. After the death of Abu Bakr (r), whenever an administrative issue came to him for decision, he used to cry and say that he can never compete with Abu Bakr (r) (in hikmah and good deeds). And here we are, fighting over which jamaat is on haq, and declaring each other kafirs on small disagreements.. Via Muhammad Ali
