A Mental Ward Exposed: During the world war ll, more than 40,000 men refused to go to war, three thousand of these objectors were instead assigned by the federal government to work in state mental hospitals. Many of these institutions were filthy, run-down and staffed with abusive workers. Charlie Lord, a young Quaker was sent to work at a mental ward called Philadelphia State Hospital. He secretly took photographs to expose the horrors of the institution. These are his photos.
