A Million Ways to Die in the West is one of those films that respects the audiences intelligence. It does not try to make you laugh using dumb humor nor does it sell itself to the lowest common denominator. West is just a good old-fashioned comedy that will make you laugh. Seth MacFarlane(who co-writes the script with Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild) does a good job directing this western tale and he actually has a good grasp of the material at hand. People that are a fan of westerns will most likely enjoy this. MacFarlane does a good job not allowing any character to be underutilized because they all bring something to the table. The screenplay is also well written and MacFarlane, Sulkin and Wild truly writes some funny scenarios for all of the characters. The dialogue is funny and witty and I also love the social commentary embedded within it. Joel McNeelys musical score is very well done and it is very reminiscent of past western movies. McNeelys score makes you feel like you are watching the old westerns from the 50s and 60s. West succeeds due to its likeable cast and their performances. Seth MacFarlane is great as the films unsung hero and he does a good job carrying the film on his shoulders. He is the soul anchor and surprisingly, he is a very good actor. Charlize Theron is great as his love interest and she adds a lot more weight to a role that could have been one dimensional. They are backed by a great supporting cast that includes Liam Neeson, Neil Patrick Harris, Giovanni Ribisi, Sarah Silverman and Amanda Seyfriend. Like I said earlier, I really enjoyed the social commentary and themes presented in West. Themes of masculinity, self esteem, how we view history and relationships are handled in funny and honest light by Seth MacFarlane. One downside about West is that it kind of does lag behind towards the end. However, it still was an enjoyable movie. Above all, A Million Ways to Die in the West shows us the importance of having a healthy self-esteem. Once you start believing in yourself, the sky is truly the limit.
