A NOTORIOUS killer who sparked a manhunt when he escaped from a Swansea cell using only his shoelaces is on the run again. James William Stevenson has breached the conditions of his release from jail and is wanted back behind bars. South Wales Police are advising the public not to approach him, but to report any information they may have on his whereabouts. The 34-year-old was jailed in 2002 for the manslaughter of Gorseinon man Paul Mainwaring. He killed the 46-year-old epileptic by sticking newspaper in his mouth and taping over it. Mr Mainwaring’s body was later dumped in the River Tawe. In 2005 he escaped from a Dorset prison where he was being held for the manslaughter. Four years later Stevenson went on the run again after fleeing from his cell at Swansea’s Guildhall Court, just minutes after he was sentenced to five years in prison for possessing a shotgun. It later emerged he had inserted a shoelace into the cell door and used it to pull back a spring-loaded latch before climbing 28 feet over razor wire protecting the inner courtyard and gaining access to a flat roof. He was on the run for two weeks, but despite an offer of a £5,000 reward for information and a manhunt which included 40 officers, he could not be found. He later handed himself in. Stevenson, who has links to the Townhill area of Swansea, is described as 5ft 10in tall, of medium build, with short brown hair and hazel eyes. Acting Chief Inspector Jason Davies of Swansea Central Police Station said: “Despite extensive enquires over the last few days we have not located Stevenson, I would urge anyone with information as to his whereabouts to come forward as a matter of urgency. “Members of the public are advised not approach him but report any information immediately.” Can you help?
