A PRAYER IN A THUNDERSTORM Sergei Sosedkin 05 Aug 2013 1:00 AM Scripture Reading: Philippians 4:4-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. —Philippians 4:6 When I was a teenager, I remember my grandmother following a tradition of quietly praying during every thunderstorm. She didn’t seem to be scared or worried, but she still prayed. At that time I wasn’t a Christian, and one time I challenged my grandma by saying that her prayers weren’t necessary, because scientists explained what lightning and thunder are all about. Besides, our building had a lightning rod on top! She softly replied to me that everyone needed to pray to God. We need a personal connection to God to feed our faith. And there are many other people out there who need our prayers too—including those who are outside during a thunderstorm. Today I know that my grandmother was right. The Bible teaches us how to live happily in a grumpy and worrisome world. We can pray to God and rejoice in him because he is always near. We are encouraged to present our prayer requests to God in every situation—including when we are in the midst of a thunderstorm, whether literally or figuratively. If you aren’t in the habit of regularly communicating with God in prayer, you don’t have to wait for a special occasion. Why not try it today? Prayer can be a great source of comfort and encouragement in your relationship with God. Prayer: Father, thank you for the great privilege of communing and fellowshiping with you in prayer.
