A Pathway to Hope rescue received a call from a neighbor that there was a local stray friendly cat that was very pregnant. When we responded, the neighbor told us there was also a male cat with a large laceration on his side. Given the urgent nature of a pregnant and wounded cat, we immediately offered assistance. Just a few hours later, we went to pick up the cats, after dropping traps for the neighbor. They responded that the cats were at the end of the driveway in the dark in traps, and no one would be coming out to speak to us. As soon as we saw the cats, we knew these were not strays. This family had dumped their pets into rescue, one pregnant and one with a large 3 MONTH old untreated necrotic wound, under the premise that they were trying to help stray cats in the neighborhood. When confronted, they admitted the lie stating, well what did you want me to do? They refused to take back their female cat, but offered to take back the male cat after his wound was treated and put him outside only. Of course, they will never get either cat back. We brought Jesse, the wounded cat, to the vet the next morning. The doctor was appalled at his condition. He was dying an extremely slow death - his wound had abscessed months ago, the skin had fallen off, and what was left was a huge piece of open flesh and dead tissue. Jesse had done an amazing job keeping his wound clean at all costs, even when tossed outside for urinating in the house (he was unneutered). Jesse needed surgery immediately to remove the dead tissue and close the laceration. His body was under so much stress, yet he still accepted affection and purred shyly. Jesse is now recovering from surgery and will be accepted into Barks rescue for placement. Alex, the pregnant kitty, is a love. She has never been vetted and has been cared for minimally, mostly just tossed outside as a punishment for urinating in the house, but she accepts and gives love freely immediately kissing a 2 year old after rescue. Alex was vetted and will go into foster through Barks rescue to have her babies. She is due very soon, and her babies love to give anyone holding Alex love kicks. Please help Pathway and Barks support Jesses surgery and recovery and Alexs care by donating at: apathwaytohope.org/how-can-you-help.html. We arent looking for mean or rude comments towards these neighbors. We simply need your help to make sure they are loved and cared for, for the remainder of their lives.
