A Place Called Hope If you dont have skills, youll have few options in Mozambique. There is nothing to fall back on, no safety net. Life becomes a daily struggle to survive. A Place Called Hope is about seven people whose lives have been significantly affected by their involvement with a training centre called Tariro, a local language name that translates as Hope. The young men and women who complete the two-year course acquire skills that will give them hope for the future, the opportunity to earn an income and the possibility to raise a family. Made by Philip Taylor and his 12-year-old son Daniel Taylor. Director: Philip Taylor Born and raised in East Africa, Philip trained for 3 years at Salisbury College of Art 86-89 then 18 months BBC Film department 89-91 before branching out in 93 to make his own films in Kenya, Uganda and Nigeria as SaltLight International Productions. A Film Director on See Hear! at the BBC 94-96; Head of Video at Pantechnicon Creative Services 96-2000; Head of Production at Myriad Productions 2000. Founded Taylors TV 2001. Freelance film editor 2006-present. Director’s Statement When I and my son Daniel, then 12 years old, took our camera equipment to Mozambique to visit a childhood friend, we knew we wanted to make some kind of short film. We thought it might be 5x2 minute films. But in post we discovered that our footage could draw out the significance of Tariro in the lives of its graduates, because it gives them hope for the future. Working with our favourite composer and co-producer, Luke Corradine, has been a wonderful treat, as usual. This has been entirely self-funded. An earlier version of the film has already played a significant role in the decision by a UK charity to raise money for a new classroom and new workshop and to already have helped Tariro buy equipment.
