A Place Called North Main Street I took a walk last night, not - TopicsExpress

A Place Called North Main Street I took a walk last night, not far from where I live, but half a world away. As I walked the hard concrete sidewalks, in the dark and cold of the night, I passed homes where they live the American dream, then down the hill past the Go-Go bar, past houses where they had not quite found the dream, but have become the victims of this trickle down economics, where the river has run very dry. The retread tire place, and recycled junk of the rich, cars old or broken.Past small stores that had seen better days, liquor, smokes, and food with prices too high for the poor. Then along the river bank past men out in the cold, living in boxes or sleeping under plastic, staying warm with cheap wine. From there to find my young friend on North Main, as I walk the block, I hear someone call my name, "Ian!!" How are you,"" Hanging out" this brother seems to me kind of cold and kind of hard, like, I don’t want you around. "Have you seen my friend _______? " "Up the street across the way hanging out". He tells his friend, "He works with Mr. Coles! In the Theater program, Hey don’t hang here too long the corps ‘ll come". As he pulls a wad of money out , sending his buddy down the block for something already planned. "I hope to see you soon, we are planing a show to help the youth, here in Paterson ". As I continue my walk down the block warmer now, but see why the brother can not make a change, what he does, he does to survive!! So as I turn up the hill again I looked for a wall, but it is not a wall you can see but the wall in peoples hearts. You will see these young men are walled in on every side, with no way out. The Ghetto is built because no one really cares that much, to hear the cry, to pull down the walls, and help the brother up! There is One, who came to lift me up, and He said you go to the poor; bring them the good news, so now I must lift my brother up!! PS. Some day soon they’ll lock this brother up again, and maybe throw away the key. Three square a day, at a 97% return rate to the system here in NJ, it will happen very soon, or he may get shot, or a knife in the chest, at a deal gone bad. Freedom! Freedom!
