A READING from: In The Company of The Holy Mother Page 33 In Jayrambati there was a man named Amjad, who was a Muslim and a bandit. He used to address Sri Sarada Devi as Mother, and she showed him special favour. To a niece who protested about her undue kindness, she replied, As Sharat is my child so also is Amjad. Sharat was Swami Saradananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna and the secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission, and Amjad a criminal. Repeatedly, Holy Mother said, I am the mother of the wicked as I am the mother of the virtuous. To reassure her disciples, she used to say, Never fear. Whenever you are in distress, just say to yourself, I have a mother. How truly Nivedita said about the Holy Mother: In her one sees realized that wisdom and sweetness to which even the simplest of women may attain. And yet to myself the stateliness of her courtesy and her great open mind are almost as wonderful as her sainthood. Holy Mother, besides suffering from rheumatism, which made her limp while walking, frequently fell victim to malaria. In February 1920, as a result of illness, she bade farewell to Jayrambati and came to Calcutta for treatment. The disease was diagnozed as kala-azar, which at that time was considered incurable, Different physicians were consulted, but the illness only became worse.
