A Saskatchewan First Nations leader says the Canadian government showed the world this week that it does not respect aboriginal rights. Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Perry Bellegarde expressed frustration and disappointment after Canada was the only nation to raise objections after delegates at the World Conference on Indigenous Peoples, which ran Monday and Tuesday at the United Nations Headquarters, adopted a consensus statement reaffirming support for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The declaration was originally made by the UN General Assembly in 2007.
