A Shot at Humility Read Isaiah 19:1 through 23:18 During the final round of the Masters Golf Tournament in 1961, Arnold Palmer approached the tee box for his final hole. Palmer smiled at the crowd and spotted a friend who mouthed the words, “Congratulations.” Proudly, Palmer moved from the green to shake the man’s hand. However, when he returned, he found his focus had disappeared. His next shot landed in a nearby sand trap, and his last shot landed just over the edge of the green. Arnold Palmer did not win the 1961 Masters. Oftentimes, pride starts out as nothing more than a positive sense of accomplishment—a mere distraction. However, if left unchecked, pride can dominate a person’s life. When pride takes over, reliance on self can overshadow the need for God. The Lord Almighty planned it, to bring down her pride in all her splendor and to humble all who are renowned on the earth (Isaiah 23:9). Pride has been the root of human destruction from the beginning. Fortunately, God offers second chances to those who learn in their humility. Prayer Suggestion: God, please show me any unrecognized pride in my life. Quicklook: Isaiah 23:1–9
