A TRIBUTE TO MALALAI KAKAR... A REMARKABLE WOMAN, A TRUE HERO, NOT DEFINED BY THE BURKA, BUT BY SO MUCH MORE... HAVE A WATCH. (Segment starts at 20.30) There’s been a bit of a kerfuffle of late over Senator Jacqui Lambie’s use of a photo of Afghan Policewoman Malalai Kakar in an online campaign to ‘ban the burka’. I was blessed to film with Malalai Kakar for my Nat Geo doco series “Extreme Tourist: Afghanistan” in 2008. We met her in Kandahar three mths before her assassination by the Taliban. She was a remarkable woman, a national hero. Not defined by the burka. The doco and series was dedicated to her. I don’t mean this to be a forum for people to slag off Senator Lambie, so please don’t do that, but I thought it might be nice for some of you to see and hear Malalai as a person… not someone under a burka… and to remember her as many of the people of Afghanistan do: brave, humble, hard working, proud, respectful, groundbreaking, iconic – and with a great sense of humour! A Lieutenant Colonel, she was the head of Kandahars department of crimes against women. She was a detective, a mother, a wife, a proud Afghan and a wonderful human being. This doesn’t in any way do her amazing life justice, but… the segment starts at 20.30 and remember that it was shot for a young audience. ustream.tv/recorded/22814067
