A Taught Religon by Frank Jamerson Under Judaism, people were born into Gods family and then taught to know God. Jeremiah prophesied that the day would come when they shall teach no more every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord; for they shall all know me, from the least to the greatest of them, saith the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more (Jer. 31:34). This passage is quoted in Hebrews 8, and applied to the New Covenant. Therefore, under the New Covenant, people must be taught to know the Lord before they enter Gods family. Jesus emphasized the importance of teaching when he said: It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me (Jn. 6:45). In Matthews account of the great commission (the charge to go into all the world), he said, teach all nations and after baptizing them, teach them to observe all things I have commanded you (Matt. 28:18-20). Just as there can be no harvest without seed, there can be no children of God without the word being planted in the hearts of men. It must be learned and obeyed by each individual who would become a child of God. There are some conclusions we want to notice from this emphasis on teaching. 1. Christianity cannot be inherited. A person raised in the church does not automatically enter Gods family. Each one must learn before he can obey. 2. Infants cannot be in the church. They are not lost, and therefore do not need to be saved. They are in a safe condition. Since all in Gods family must know the Lord and infants cannot know then they are not subject to the gospel call until they have the ability to understand. 3. The truth must be obeyed (Rom. 6:17,18). It cannot be obeyed accidentally. One who is ignorant of truth cannot obey it. 4. The importance of teaching the truth imposes a grave responsibility upon every child of God. The job is too big to be left to a few. The rapid growth of the early church was the result of those who were taught, going every-where teaching the word (Acts 8:4). We were taught in order to be saved, and the saved have a responsibility of sharing that information with others. When Jesus said go ye, that means go me!
