A Tribute To The Greatest Hitter Of A Generation. If you havent heard Hall of Fame rightfielder for the San Diego Padres Tony Gwynn passed away. So I wanted to share a story on how I was personally touched by Tonys kindness and dedication to growing the game of baseball. When I was 13 I was lucky enough to attend a hitting clinic Tony gave at San Diego State. Tony would march up and down the cages carefully watching the swings of each boy and girl... ...But what really lit up Tonys eyes was coming across a struggling hitter. So the second day I was there I was swinging the bat like a cow on ice skates... it was brutal. Then I get this tap on the shoulder, Son.. youll be a great hitter... just believe that. I could feel my heart race because for kids in San Diego, Tony Gwynn was like Babe Ruth is for Yankee fans. So after showing me a couple tips the ball simply jumped off the bat. I was hitting pitches I couldnt even imagine hitting. That season I hit .447 and made the all-star team. And every time I got a base hit through the 5.5 hole or between the thirdbaseman and shortstop I thought of that moment and smiled. Id say that Tony got more pleasure from watching his students hit the ball and improve than he did signing a huge contract or winning batting titles. Just the guy he was. So every time you get a hit through the 5.5 hole give Tony a little tip of the cap... it was his favorite place to hit the ball. So from the Anderson Bat Family our thoughts and prayers are with the Gwynn family. youtu.be/ZhuupC2BWNk
