A Wintry Autumn day is a good day to leave Ireland, clouds skiddin’, showers spillin’ and leaves thrown around in the wind. Anto was on the CIE bus when she landed in Tuam and took me on board. Flying out of Knock. Ryanair are great these days. So easy and easy-going. Someone told me that it was the staff on the desks, at the gates and on the aisles who lobbied their management to make it easier for the passengers and consequently for them. Good on ye. We hired a fine car in John Lennon Airport, a big black jammer with a huge boot and a fancy screen on the dash. The walk across the road from the terminal to the car-rental building was a bit challenging. It’s not ideal carrying a guitar or a sax case in a gale. We’re booked in to somewhere in St. Helen’s after the first gig of the tour for tomorrow night, but we’re in ol’ Blighty a day early for safety so Anto rings the woman at the hotel and there’s no room at her inn tonight – some big soccer game on in the vicinity apparently. She recommends going out a bit further from Liverpool – Haydock maybe; All the years I’m listening to racing from Haydock Park and I never knew where it was. We drive out to the racecourse. There’s a Holiday Inn right beside it with not much else around. They’ll give us a room for a hundred and fifteen quid. I look up a few others on the fancy phone and The Pied Bull Inn in Newton-Le-Willows down the road will give us a room for forty-five pound fifty. Were up seventy-five quid already and we’re only in the country for a couple of hours. We’ll have to have a little celebration…. Sitting here in our twin room in The Pied Bull. It’s on the main street in town so that’s what we like; able to walk for a bite to ate and a drink. The bathroom is down the corridor. Some would call it Spartan but it’s clean and cozy and I doubt the Spartans had an electric shower, a clean wash basin and a flush toilet. Nothing wrong with it. Nearly time for tea….
