A big day today. Am a bit of a bundle of nerves. Today my story airs on CNN as part of our Roots series. For some context, as an adopted kid I have had questions about who I was for as long as I can remember. When CNN producers approached me about participating I was THRILLED, but also quite nervous. What would they uncover? What did I want to learn? Would it change me? How would it change me? Well today well find out answers to some if those questions. One thought- many years ago when discussing the topic of my adoption with a friend, I seemed to finally find a way to articulate what I was looking for. I told her imagine I am a tree. A tree that grew from a sapling into a fine robust tree, healthy and proud. Underground, sure there is a root system, feeding and supplying that tree with needed nutrients and moisture from the ground. A great environment around that tree to support its growth. But what if... what if only part of that root system underground was present? That tree would grow, to be sure, but would suffer somewhat from the benefit of the full set of roots, and most likely develop a lean, instead of growing up to the sky. I used that metaphor to explain to my dear friend why searching for my roots was important to me: I felt like that tree, loved and supported by a wonderful and loving environment but missing important roots. That voyage to discover them begins now.
