A blast from the past, with ending paragraphs by my boss Don Darby when I worked at his business, Signs To Go in Montgomery. At six years old, Don Darby saw the red-and-white uniforms of the Lee band for the first time, and knew he wanted to be there. A local businessman and former radio personality, Darby played trumpet in the band during this period. He says band director John Long was a great innovator and made sure his players believed they were special. “He once told us if the Robert E. Lee band laid down and wallered in the mud on a Friday night,” said Darby, “by the next Friday, every other band in the state would lay down and waller in the mud to try to keep up with us.”
