A case study of one of our students: Rocky, 12 year old - TopicsExpress

A case study of one of our students: Rocky, 12 year old thoroughbred gelding. Past of intermittent lameness in front feet, has been barefoot for 2 years and hooves are still transitioning. Wears barefoot boots when ridden. Has become increasingly lame over the last 48 hours on off-side front hoof. Confirmed abscess brewing- increased digital pulse, increased heat, and slight swelling pastern area. Treatment suggested- complete Raindrop technique (hoof application) daily and use poultice utilising Tea-Tree, Oregano, Lavender, Frankincense and Peppermint oils with Epsom Salts (warm water). Results: Rocky was quite jumpy to begin with, so I began by breathing slowly and running my hands gently down each leg and over his back, then up to his head to begin a Valor balancing. I applied Valor to each heel bulb area, massaging in circular motions working from near front clockwise around his body. I then placed Valor on his wither and sacral area. Rocky released a big sigh. I then put Valor in each hand, standing in front of his chest running my hands down his shoulder blades 3 times. Rocky was happy to allow me to then place more Valor on my hands and place my hands behind his ears. He did step back after a minute which I took as a sign he had enough. I than began the ERT- hoof application. Oils applied included Oregano, Thyme, Basil, Cypress, Wintergreen, Marjoram, Copaiba and Peppermint. I allowed Rocky to sniff each oil prior to application, and every time he predominantly used his right nostril. The oil he reacted to was Oregano (snorted and moved away), I diluted Oregano with V6 prior to application. I allowed a few minutes between each application. Once the ERT was complete we soaked Rocky’s hoof in a solution of warm water, Epsom salts, Lavender, Tea Tree, Oregano, Frankincense and Peppermint YL oils. I repeated this treatment for 3 days. On the third day the abscess burst through the heel at the coronary band. ERT was repeated for another 2 days, and then Lavender was used to help healing progress. Lameness completely gone within the week!
