A ‘changed’ Imran deserved more applause from PML-N for trendsetting speech ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday deserved more applause from the ruling Pakistan Muslim League MPs who kept complete silence while the Opposition lawmakers thumped desks cautiously for his trend setting speech. He refrained from using a single word, which could have been agitated by his opponents while his speech was heard in pin drop silence. The fact that he has caused a qualitative change in the political culture of this country was proved quite correct. Imran Khan was a transformed man having no grudges no political point scoring and no self-aggrandizement in his tone and tenor throughout his speech. He was all pain and all sensitivity for the revival of national glory, burying the past and starting a new chapter of interaction, unity and truth. There was a disturbing silence on treasury benches during a landmark speech of the PTI chairman, which he delivered as a ‘Pakistani’ and not merely as an Opposition leader. Had his speech not carried mind boggling content their own number two leader Interior Minister and former Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan would not have instantly acknowledged and paid his full respects. He was at his best not only honour PTI chairman’s maiden entry to National Assembly but he went miles away to extend unprecedented support to Khan’s suggestions for putting the country back on the tracks of prosperity, peace and integrity. Imran Khan surprised, rather disappointed, many of his critics as well as supporters who expected a speech full of fire and venom but today he was in a different frame of mind and showing the path of reconciliation, a path of compromise on national issues leaving the past hatchet behind. Surely, it would have made big difference, had Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif been around and listened and his immediate response would have possibly set another trend and parliamentary culture bereft of traditional shouting and counter shouting. Chaudhry Nisar rightly said, “This house is no more going to entertain cries and loud speaking but it has transformed into a house of statesmen.”Imran’s speech was a summary of his own speeches during election campaign, starting from recounting Pakistan’s past glory of mid 60’s when it was being predicted to become California of Asia to its present downfall, its extreme lacking in delivery of justice which was main cause of its lagging behind in all spheres of life and which caused dismemberment of the country and is playing havoc in Balochistan, his call for coming out of ‘American war’ and owning it as a nation, but his most daring but tame narration of negative impact of the May 11 general polls was peak of his presentation. His heart rendering complaints against the conducting of polls by Election Commission and his impatient appeal to the CJP should not fall on deaf ears. But the response to his call for a thorough inquiry into the conduct of polls to at least determine where it went all wrong was well received by the treasury and Chaudhry Nisar offered even more than what Imran Khan asked. He put huge emphasis on eradication of corruption and trend of money laundering by the officials and his stress on changing the governance into an effective and efficient one was worth of it. Earlier, it was a scene to watch when people in large numbers waved to the PTI chairman on all his route from his Bani Gala residence to the Red Zone. His welcome was restricted though due to the security and his own vulnerable health otherwise he would have witnessed a hero’s reception. Imran Khan looked fragile in first look but quite composed while walking in the corridors of parliament which he had left five years back in anger and distress. He recited the words of his oath as read out by speaker rather than reading from the written version placed on desk. He kept sitting till the speech of Opposition leader Khursheed Shah. During speech, Imran consciously mentioned the responsibility that has befallen on his party to make Khyber Pakhtunkhwa a model of justice, governance, and corruption free administration. He gave few hints about weeding out corruption by an accountability body out of chief minister’s control, which would put firm hand on corrupt even if they were ministers or other high ranking functionaries
