A chilly day today with highs in the low to mid 30s. A weakening - TopicsExpress

A chilly day today with highs in the low to mid 30s. A weakening Alberta Clipper will dive just to our south and transfer energy to a coastal low. The low will develop as it departs the area, too late to cause any real impacts. We could see close to an inch of snowfall from this afternoon through late tonight/early Thursday morning, though there could be some isolated higher amounts as some heavier precipitation will be just to the south of Long Island. Remaining insulated underneath the cloud cover, overnight lows will only dip into the mid to upper 20s, low 20s in the Pine Barrens. High pressure will build back in for Thursday and Friday with highs in the upper 30s. Then, on Saturday, it looks like we may finally get our first impactful winter storm. As of now it looks like snow will move in early Saturday morning, with a wintry mix developing during the midday/afternoon hours, before changing back over to snow during the evening. Preliminary totals look like were somewhere in the 3-6 range, but with the possibility of layers of mixed precipitation underneath, travel could be treacherous. As were still 2 days away from the event, all eyes will be on the models today, and first call snowfall maps will be issued later today. Ive included: 1) The US National Weather Service New York NY snowfall totals through 7am Thursday 2) The Euro surface pressure and 850mb wind speed for 7pm Saturday 3) The GFS 10 day meteogram for Islip. This shows temperatures on a downhill slide during the period and an estimated 9 of snow totals for 3 snow events starting this afternoon. That will surely change over the next several runs.
