"A comment on Govt Control of Hindu Temples in India" ---------------------------------------------------------- In Andhra Pradesh too there is a dept for administering Hindu temples and is called by the name Endowments Dept. If a temple crosses a prescribed income level, the same is taken over by the dept. Like any Govt dept it has the qualities of corruption, appointing non-qualified people to manage the affairs and worst aspect is appointing executive officers who are "Atheists". But Peethams and mutts do not come under its jurisdiction. This dept also has architectural division in designing temples as per Shastras. But there have been cases where private trusts mismanaged the temple income and the Govt hate to take them over on receiving complaints from devotees. Rajiv Malhotra comment: If a temple is accused of mismanagement by the devotees, the same laws should prevail as for corporate entities where shareholders allege mismanagement. In the latter case, government does NOT "nationalize" the corporate entity each time someone makes a complaint. Also, this intervention by government is not done in the case of ANY OTHER RELIGION EXCEPT HINDUISM. So, the pretext of protecting the interests of the devotees is an excuse. BJP supporters must address, why their party did nothing to repeal such laws during their rule. And even today in states ruled by them why do they not remove such policies ?
