A common theme with carb and sugar zealots is that they will tell you that a craving for sweet foods could be from being addicted to sugar or mysterious parasites controlling your mind to put sweet stuff into your mouth. A common theme this week working with a marathon runner and a triathlete who both craved sugary foods. Why? They werent consuming enough energy to support their sports. In some cases one of my clients was consuming as low as 1000 kcals per day and the triathlete only 2000. Energy, digestion sleep and other critical markers of health all out. Its not a mystery, sweet cravings often come from a physiological need for more easily available fuel such as carbohydrate. If the body is stressed from physical, biochemical or even psychological factors the need for easily digestible carbohydrates is increased. Thats why you might crave salt-sodium or even chocolate for magnesium. Anti-stress nutrients not increased stress nutrients provide the support needed during any increased load to the triad of health. Theres no bogey man at work, just a need to support metabolism.
