A complete stranger recently emailed me on LinkedIn and accused me of having a self-made church as well as being new age and preaching a doctrine of prosperity. I knew not to take him seriously when he threw some personal insults my way. This person also claimed to be into meditation as well as a student of Buddhism and Christianity. Although I mostly ignored his accusations, I do try to see things from anothers perspective. (I have a good enough hold on my ego so Im not taking it personally.) But I hope what I do isnt perceived in the light he suggested. I created a group that is about universal love. The goal was to shed some light where I believed I saw a lot of darkness among countries, races, religions & wars taking place after the 9/11 tragedy. My teachings come from 30 years of study of yoga, major religion and Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Law). Had he taken a moment to actually glance through my book on prosperity he wouldve realized that my prosperity is actually an acronym for Principle Reasons Optimistic Service Produces Exponential Richness Inevitably Through You. The focus is on serving others and the richness I refer to is the Spirit or Self-Realization. All major spiritual figures Ive ever studied promoted service to our fellow man. In fact, my book actually challenges many of the notions in the Law of Attraction as many believe sitting around hoping for wealth, love & money will come if they can just think positively about it. Those of you who have studied some ancient teachings have certainly come across the concepts of desire being the cause of mans identification with the flesh and the material world. Some suggest any desire is a limitation. Others teach that desire is natural but we should not be attached to our material things. So this leads me to my question... Most of us prefer a comfortable material life. Im from the South Bronx so I know poverty but Ive also been blessed to have attained a comfortable life through hard work. Im certainly not wealthy. Ive walked away from all sorts of material things and opportunities in my lifetime. But what are your feelings on spiritual growth and making a living? Ive personally studied Karma Yoga and Bhakti Yoga and they teach that if we do good things then good things come back to us as well that anything we do, we should do with devotion for God. Im curious to hear some of your thoughts? Is any material success in direct opposition to spiritual awakening? spiritualyoganetwork/forum/thread/78/can-we-reconcile-spirituality-materialism/
