A conversation I had with Lilly today while we were watching a movie about a girl during the Great Depression. Lilly: Why are they afraid of the hobos? Me: They think the hobos are the ones stealing from people, and when things like that happen, people want someone to blame quickly to make themselves feel better. L: Even if they didnt really do it? What if they wanted to be a hobo? M: Yeah, people become homeless for many reasons. Back in the Great Depression a lot of people were poor because there werent very many jobs for people, so they couldnt pay for things they needed. Some of them probably did steal to be mean or selfish, but most of them took things to be able feed their hungry families, kind of like in the story of Robin Hood. Lilly: Well stealing is never okay. M: Even if you are like Robin Hood and steal a potato from someone who doesnt need it and you gave it to someone who was starving? L: No. You cant steal. Me: Why not? (getting her to tell me. This is how we discuss things and learn) L: You can ask for it, or find someone who would give you a potato, but stealing is bad because what if they were saving it to give to someone else they knew who was a hobo? People should always want to help other people, so there wouldnt be stealing.
