A couple of random thoughts that may some how fit together: It is important to understand that conservatism (and I suppose various brands of libertarianism) are not associated with any specific political party. A person may find more conservatives in the republican party, but it does not follow that the republican party is conservative. Moreover, the same can be said for libertarians and the republican party. It is evidently clear that the presence of Ron Paul in the G.O.P did not make the G.O.P libertarian. I have decided to dissociate myself from party politics. I am not interested in the discussion between democrats and republicans. I find it to be boring and trite. The arguments are a mile wide and an inch deep. Indeed, the current discussion hardly contains a single recognizable argument of any level of sophistication. Instead of getting bogged down in party politics, I am going to focus on my philosophical views, refining and strengthening my arguments, and altering my views as needed while I work through the evidence and argumentation. I will still discuss current events, but my aim will be to examine these events philosophically in order to understand the world better. The kind of conservatism I adhere to probably wont be easy on or tickle contemporary American ears, but I think, like Roger Scruton has said, conservatism has the benefit of being true but boring, while liberalism has the luxury of being exciting but false. I care about what is true, not what is popular. If you want to know what is going to save this country, it is going to be a healthy dose of truth. And truth cannot always be delivered with Novocain. In my view, contemporary conservatism is completely unattached to any sort of philosophical worldview guiding their core principles. Various individuals that consider themselves conservative have stumbled on some truth, and some have been essential for exposing the agenda of leftist liberalism, but they have been an utter failure in persuading common men and women to adopt a thoroughly conservative way of looking at the world. A metaphysically robust conservatism complete with a powerful theory of moral philosophy is desperately needed in order to combat the trajectory of institutionalized scientism, moral relativism leading to nihilism, and fundamentalism of every sort (Christian and/or atheist). My aim is to articulate this kind of conservatism. LW
