A dealer of mine invited me to consult with a builder and a designer regarding acoustics inside a theater room they were designing last week. The room was well underway for completion before I got involved, they had surround speakers in the ceiling and solid wood cabinet in the front of the room so there is absolutely no absorption where it is most needed, however the room was sound proofed. After I explain the difference between sound proofing and sound control, they concluded that they wanted me to add some acoustic panels to enhance the sound quality of the room. As I am explaining the value of acoustic panels and why it is important to you a transparent fabric to cover them, the sporadic designer outburst saying “this room was not engineered properly in the first place so why do we need to use transparent fabric on the acoustic panel? what difference does it makes?" I took a minute to think about what she had said and then responded. I asked her, “If I am driving a Hyundai Sonata that is not engineered as well as the 745 BMW does that mean it’s not necessary to use premium gasoline? Adding acoustic panels will always enhance the sound quality of the room whether or not the room was engineered with acoustics in mind.
