The skimmer will then pick up the device a few hours or days later and download the card data to a computer. “It’s as easy as opening and reading an email,” Siciliano said. That data can then be used to create a fake credit card, a process similar to burning a music CD. Blank plastic cards are available on sites such as Amazon in packs of 500 for about $30. Skimming devices also are available online, at a cost ranging from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on the sophistication of the device, Siciliano said.
