Stone-pelting has emerged as a much more endemic phenomenon than it has ever been since 2010, radiating outwards of its urban centres in down-town Srinagar, Baramulla, Sopore and Pulwama to the countryside, even to the far-flung, obscure villages and towns, including Hajin, once a bastion of pro-government gunmen (Ikhwanis) in the 1990s. In Hajin, a man in his 20s picked up a brick and drew a line across the main road, dividing the major part of the residential area from the 10 polling stations. “Anyone crossing the red line will be seen as a traitor,” he said.
