A direct and superficial examination of things does not always enable us to conclude that reality is identical with perception.(read that again.) Reasoning and experience must intervene to correct the direct impression of the senses and to construct in our brains a picture which corresponds to what we call the external world,the objective world,in opposition to the subjective idea which is the result of the information given by the senses.
