A disturbing lack of realism -- thats the way John McCain has put it in the New York Times. But what are the origins of this intellectual deficit in the State Department and other agencies, responsible for the overseas policy planning? І suspect this is due to a certain trend in higher education, allowing a student of IR to be broadely competent in, err Freudist foundations of the prisoners dilemma or issues like Why is America also guilty of changes in, err, royal penguins migration map?, than in the discipline per se. Back in 1942, when Japan has attacked Americans at Pearl Harbor, the US, at first, was not paricularly ready to retaliate. But young American heads were at least free from crap. Do you really want to know, who is interested in transforming American IR professional community into a chaotic crowd of Teletubbies? Call the Kremlin.
