A famous French band will perform a concert in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday, the event organizer said Monday in a press release. French Institute in Vietnam ” /> The “Jazz va nhac Phuong Dong” (Jazz and Oriental Music) concert will begin at 8:00 pm at IDECAF, 28 Le Thanh Ton Street, District 1. It will feature a performance by French quartet Fayçal Salhi. Audience members will get the chance to listen to the beautiful melodies of an Oud, a famous pear-shaped string instrumentfrom the Middle East, performed by Fayçal Salhi, the band’s founder. Several western instruments, such as the saxophone and contrabass, will be played by other members of the quartet, creating a unique combination that involves both modern and traditional melodies. Salhi was born and raised in a family of musicians in Algeria, and moved to France at the age of 11. Seven years later, he started to learn music on his own, and played guitar before switching to the Oud and oriental flute. The artist’s musical style has been inspired by the melodies of Andalousie that have influenced him since his childhood. He released two solo albums, including “Sur les Routes de l’Orient” (On the Routes of the Orient), and “Timgad”, before recording “Elwène,” which was released in March 2011 with his quartet. Salhi also composed the soundtrack of “Maison Jaune” (The Yellow House), a movie by Algerian director Amor Hakkar, which won several awards at the Locarno and Valencia film festivals in 2007.
