A few Tuesday morning words of advice about contractors/home - TopicsExpress

A few Tuesday morning words of advice about contractors/home improvement: 1. MD, VA, DC all require contractors to hold a valid home improvement contractors license just about all services. You should always verify the license status of anyone you hire. All three jurisdictions have easy to use websites to verify a companies or individuals license status. In many cases, hiring someone without a license can nullify your home owners insurance coverage and also will eliminate any recourse against that person/company as you have an invalid contract. 2. Never, ever hire a contractor who doesnt have valid insurance (workers comp and liability). You should ask for a copy of the insurance certificate. 3. Never pay a deposit without a written contract. Also, a deposit shouldnt ever be more than 30% of the total contract price. 4. Be wary of someone doing side work. Chances are they arent licensed or insured. They could get in big trouble with their employer. Also, if you dont have a written, valid contract with them, what happens if you arent happy with the work, they dont finish, or if they break something in your house or get hurt?
