A few days ago I was challenged by Rimanė Rimantė Budrytė to give my list of 10 books that are special for me in one way or another. I accept the challenge. Here is the list of 10 BOOKS THAT ARE SPECIAL FOR ME and influenced me in a certain way. 1. Fairy Tales of Vilhelm Hauf. For evoking imagination, being scary and fascinating at the same time and reminding me of my childhood when my parents used to read me 2 fairy-tales each evening before going to sleep. 2. Edmondo de Amicis Heart. The book that our primary school teacher used to read us during the lessons teaching us true values of life. It reminds me of the great teacher we had and the efforts she put to raise good people. 3. Books from the series “Drąsiųjų keliai”/Trail of the Brave. For fostering imagination. 4. F. Dostoevsky “The Brothers Karamazov” and “Crime and Punishement”. For immeasurable depth making me read these books again and again. 5. H. Kissinger “Diplomacy” and H. Morgenthau “The Politics Among Nations”. The first one marks my first steps in analyzing US foreign policy. The second one I frequently use in my current work. Moreover, this book reminds me of the important step in my life when I have realized: “Yes, I succeeded in finishing my PhD”. P.S. It is a pity that I could not finish the text of my thesis with sentence: “…indicates that H. Morgenthau was right” 6. Poetry by Paulius Širvys, A. Nyka-Niliūnas, S. Yesenin. Just because. 7. “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by G. Marquez. For the nostalgia it represents for me. 8. Hamlet by W. Shakespeare. For making me think of the meaning of life. Maybe too much sometimes. 9. “The Song of Achilles” by M. Miller. The book is not original by plot. However, it is very beautifully written. Therefore, for the poetic language. And for making me visit Greece. 10. J. Harris “Five Quarters of Orange” and “Blackberry Wine”. For helping to escape reality when it is necessary and representing many pleasant emotions (cosiness first of all) and constantly reminding me of France. I would like to challenge Vytautas Isoda, Sandra Gritėnaitė and Indira Aryani to give their lists of 10 books that are special for them.
