A few days ago the Independent Institute redistributed via its Facebook page a little article I wrote in 2008 called The Difference Between an Illegal Immigrant and Me. From the hundreds of comments that have come forth -- comments, it must be noted, on the Facebook page of a forthrightly libertarian organization -- one must conclude with sadness that unless these commenters are extraordinarily unrepresentative of the American people, then the American people are notable for their stupidity, their ignorance, their inhumanity, and their inability to recognize a variety of rhetorical tactics as fallacies, most often the fallacy of ad hominem argument. I am sorry to say that this showing accords well with many others I have observed in my 70 years of life in this country. Which is to say, the typical American is no damn good. He is not only an enemy of liberty, but he is, on the contrary, the perfect specimen for life in a fascist state. It would be comforting to suppose that liberty was somehow taken away from the American people, but it comes much closer to the truth to recognize that these people clamored for precisely what they have got, and they love it with all their hearts. Singing hosannas to the state, they are marching cheerfully toward the societal cliff. May God have mercy on their unworthy souls.
