A few months after my mother died, I was at dads house helping him - TopicsExpress

A few months after my mother died, I was at dads house helping him with some things when I came across moms answering machine. It still had moms outgoing message on the tape...and...she had several other recordings on the tape. Some of them, you could tell she was having a great day. Others you could tell were some of her not so good days. I listened to all of the messages....flipped the tape over and listened to some more. There messages that I had left for mom, and some that dad had left for mom....and a few recordings of conversations mom had had with others while the machine was still recording. More than a few messages were from dad...telling her he wouldnt be home tonight....then he would say I love you and hang up. Growing up, I seldom heard my dad use those words...he just wasnt the type. It was nice to hear on the tape. When I was done, I realized dad was sitting at the dining room table behind me. I asked if he wanted me to set up the machine with a new message....he said no.....not right now... For those few moments, my dad and I shared something....just the two of us. We had many meaningful conversations in the year following my mothers passing. Dad often had the same questions. Is she right here listening to us? Can she hear us right now? Id like to think shes sitting right here at the table, listening to us talk One of the topics of our last intelligible conversation before he died, was of my mother - and the hope of seeing her again. I wish Id taken that machine and kept that tape. It had both my parents voices on it, and would be priceless to me now. I have no idea what ever happened to it....I assume it was sold at auction. Lost forever...except in my memory.
