A few thoughts on the music business. Had a question today about why our catalog isnt on iTunes. This also relates to why our records are not available in the US. When you do a record deal the record company owns the rights to your music. Some bands are smart from the beginning, or become successful enough to negotiate a return of their master tapes at some point so they own them. We do not own our rights. Although Metal Blade initially released Ignorance and Surf Nicaragua and Enigma released The American Way, when we signed with Hollywood Records for Independent they aquired the rights to the previous records so it would all be in one place. Sounds reasonable, right? Things fid not work out at Hollywood and they have had a few regime changes over time. Obviously our band is not a big priority for them and they have never bothered to do anything with our records. When we have attempted to get our rights back we have been rebuffed. It makes no sense to me. Metal Blade offered them a modest sum to regain the rights. Didnt happen. Common sense would dictate that receiving any money for an asset you are not using would be better than nothing. So far it has not been the case. Hopefully things will change in the future. Wed like to be able to release the records for any fans still interested. This is why some bands go back and re-record their older records too. They dont own the original recordings but the songs are still theirs so they can record them again. We wont be doing this in case you were wondering. Now you know a little bit more on how things work in the music business.
