A filibuster has to be the dumbest parliamentary procedure used by politicians of any political affiliation in order to delay a vote. Ted Cruz (R) Texas used it yesterday in an unsuccessful attempt to defund Obamacare. He spoke non-stop for 21 hours during which he spoke about Darth Vader, Sean Connery and Chinese gooseberries. He also recited Green Eggs and Ham - "I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-Am." Strom Thurmond in 1957 has the record for the longest filibuster: he spoke non stop for 24 hours and 18 minutes during the voting for the Civil Rights Act. The rules state that the person must have both feet on the senate floor and, since bathroom breaks are not allowed, our brilliant representatives have to piss in a bucket brought to them or use diapers or urethral catheters. Nobody that I know has had to visibly poop while speaking standing up . The word "filibuster" is derived from the Spanish "filibuster", itself derived from from the Dutch "vrijbuiter", that means pirate. It was first used by Cato the Younger in Rome in 60 BC to frustrate the political objectives of Julius Caesar.
