A final thought on friends, fun friends, and un-friends. When we hold people loosely in our lives, they are both secure and free. To deny another’s autonomy is denying our own: we are not islands, but we are not peninsulas, built out from another’s land; no one person is wholly responsible for another’s lifestyle, well-being, choices. We are more tectonic plates, gliding infinitesimally against, until our edges are worn down and forests grow upon us or our irritation results in a giant upheaval and crash. The topography of our society is nothing but the scars of countless volcanic arguments and the gardens in which minds have had their meeting. Those who are delighted by our beauty, we gather close. Those who do not see it, we let gently drift away. Whatever their need, it is their need, and to live deeply, they must reach down to that and search for the satiety. We do not interfere. We do not cajole. We state the truth. We love. We wait. We pray. We watch. We conduct our own searches. We live.
