A former employee accused of the theft of more than $350,000 since 2007 from the Cuyahoga Falls Library has struck a deal with prosecutors to avoid trial, according to a spokesperson for Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Lynne S. Callahan. Theresa M. Karm, of Tallmadge appeared before Judge Callahan this morning, Oct. 30, the spokesperson said. The trial was supposed to get under way tomorrow, Oct. 31. Specifics on the plea deal were not immediately available from the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office. Michael Bowler, Karm’s attorney, did not immediately return a call seeking comment. On Aug. 7, a Summit County grand jury indicted Karm on an aggravated theft charge and a theft in office charge, both third-degree felonies. Karm entered a “not guilty” plea during her arraignment Aug. 21. Karm started working at the library in June 1996. According to Library Director Kevin Rosswurm, she “was terminated (for cause) on March 13, 2013,” but he has declined to offer more details. “She has always been the library’s fiscal officer,” according to Rosswurm. “She was hired as financial secretary,” he said, and performed the same job under several different titles over the years.
