A frequently asked question in my CultOfCopy group is: What are your favorite sales copywriting and/or persuasion books? I dont really enjoy many books about copy. They tend to be anecdotal, and are rarely applicable except to the craft of writing. But if you want to learn the art of persuasion, you have to learn how people think, and how to think yourself. The key is in engineering communication that is impregnated with infectious ideas, which when adopted, lead to action. If you are good at persuasion, your target will never believe it wasnt their own idea all along. To that end, here are 13 books I have read that are about communicating ideas as information in a way that makes other people take action. I wont give you more than the title and the author(s) and leave the rest for the student to discover, because thats better anyway. Use with caution. The only thing that makes any of this evil to use is the intent of the user... 1. Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud 2. How to Talk to Practically Anyone about Practically Anything by Barbara Walters 3. The Full Facts Book of Cold Reading by Ian Rowland 4. Catch Me If You Can by Frank Abagnale 5. Hero With a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell 6. Frogs Into Princes by Bandler and Grinder (even though I still think NLP is kinda bullshit) 7. Anything by Jorge Luis Borges 8. Anything by Elmore Leonard 9. Propaganda by Edward Bernays 10. Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds by Charles Mackay 11. The Art of War by Sun Tzu 12. The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli 13. The Medium Is The Massage by Marshall McLuhan and Quentin Fiore
