A friend asked me if I had any statistics that people can use when confronted by someone who is complaining that they dont want to pay for people who scam the welfare (Ontario Works) system. So I crunched some number yall might find interesting and helpful..... If you earn $60,000 per year you are paying $3800 income tax to the Province (most of your tax money goes to the Federal government). The 2012 expenses for ALL Provincial Community & Social Services programs was 7% of all Ontario expenses. Which means you paid $22 a month towards ALL those services. More specifically, the 2012 expenses that went to people on Ontario Works (commonly called welfare) was 2% of all Ontario expenses. Which means you paid $6.34 a month towards that service. In my opinion, $6.34 a month is a small price to pay for us to have a safety net there if we lose our employment and it takes us months before we can find work. And if 20% of the people on assistance are somehow scamming the system, I am cool with paying $1.27 a month to have a system that is there for the vast majority of people who use it when they need it. To add another layer to things, Income Tax represented only 23% of Ontarios revenue in 2012, so your income tax is only funding 23% of the welfare costs. Sidenote - If you are making $40,000, the the numbers are: $2000 per year in Ontario Income Tax $11.65 a month for ALL those Community & Social Services $3.35 a month for Ontario Works
